Training & Education

Our training and education programmes support Hawke’s Bay health professionals to achieve the best possible care for patients in our region. Our courses cover a range of topics, including pain management, caring for patients with dementia, last days of life, loss and grief, and addressing your own needs as healthcare professionals.

Healthcare professionals are invited to take a look at our upcoming course and education programme, and to get in touch with any questions.

Please only attend Training if you are feeling well. Mask wearing in Education is optional.

IMPORTANT NOTICE – Syringe Driver Training – course changes

We wish to inform you of an important update regarding the educational offerings from Cranford Hospice, specifically pertaining to the Syringe Driver training courses. We are committed to providing the highest quality of education and training, and in line with this commitment, we have made a significant change to the Initial Syringe Driver course.

The Initial course will now be delivered in a more comprehensive format, designed to enhance the learning experience, and ensure that participants gain a deeper understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of using syringe drivers. This will be an ongoing process with a review and update of the learning resources. These updates will be communicated through either our newsletters or as a news flash on its own.

Please note that there will be no changes to the refresher course for the year 2024; it will continue to be offered in its current format.

The Comprehensive Initial Syringe Driver Training (currently called the Initial / Blended Syringe Driver Training) will now consist of up to 2 hours online learning, and a test that includes both theoretical aspect and drug calculation. Following the mandatory online learning and a Pass in the test, you will then need to attend a face-to-face workshop. We have scheduled this workshop to be able to support nursing rosters better.  For now, the online learning material can be accessed from the following link: HNZ eLearning

The workshops are scheduled on a Wednesday every month from 11.30 am to 3 pm. The number of participants is limited 6 per workshop. The certificates for the Comprehensive training will be issued from Cranford Hospice.

We understand that changes to educational programs can impact your schedules and planning, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility. Our team is here to support you through this transition and answer any questions you may have.

Ngā Tūāpapa o te Pairuri Tāngata – The Fundamentals of Palliative Care Programme

Ngā Tūāpapa o te Pairuri Tāngata The Fundamentals of Palliative Care programme will give you an overview of how to care for people with palliative care needs. Being educated about palliative care will help you improve the assessment and outcomes for people in your care, their family and whānau, as well as yourself and other healthcare workers.

This is now a blended learning programme to give an overview of Palliative Care. There are four online modules and three face to face Workshops.
Start with Essence, then complete the other topics in any order:
• The Palliative Care Approach
• Managing Pain & Long-term Illnesses
• Care & Support at the End of Life

Register for Online Learning at Hospice NZ – Knowledge Hub – FoPC
Once you have completed a topic, you will receive a certificate to recognise this online achievement. However, to complete the FULL programme you need to attend the three corresponding workshops.

NOTE: You must complete the online training before attending any workshops. Bookings required.

    This blended learning consists of 2 hours online training, with theory & calculations tests, followed by a 1.5 hour practical competency workshop at Cranford Hospice.

    Currently many Managers book staff into Syringe Driver training. If you would prefer to do the blended learning option, please discuss this with your Manager.

    You must complete the Online training before attending the workshop for the Blended Learning Option.

    Target audience: anyone in Household, Reception or Health Professionals who may deal with grieving people.

    The training is held over two half-day sessions. You must be available for both days. The second day of training is 9 May 2024.

    To increase knowledge and skills in the use of syringe drivers to administer continuous subcutaneous infusions. All participants are expected to hold a current New Zealand Nursing Council Practicing Certificate.

    Suitable for Registered and Enrolled Nurses providing palliative care.

    To attain certification each nurse is required to: Attend the workshop with the opportunity to become familiar with a syringe driver and complete a practical competency assessment on the day and complete a written assessment obtaining 80% minimum in the short answer question section and 100% in the drug calculations section.

    A Specialist Palliative Care Nurse will run the workshop and be available to assist you on the day.

    This Syringe Driver Full Competency Training Workshop provides 4 hours of continuing education.
