About the role
We are seeking a Kaitakawaenga to join our team leading culturally safe, mana-enhancing palliative care for Māori and whānau.
You will partner with patients, whānau, hapū and iwi to support care planning and manaakitanga, embedding Te Tiriti-informed practice across our services. You will also support culturally responsive care for Pasifika.
Working alongside our multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in supporting whānau with their hospice care and ensuring their cultural needs, values and preferences are upheld.
Key responsibilities
· Provide culturally informed support, advocacy and manaaki for Māori patients and whānau
· Build strong relationships through whakawhanaungatanga to support shared care planning
· Work alongside clinical teams to embed Māori cultural values and practices which drive culturally safe care
· Provide cultural guidance to staff on tikanga Māori, wairuatanga and end-of-life care
· Facilitate equitable access to hospice services helping reduce barriers for Māori.
· Engage with iwi, hapū, marae and community providers strengthening partnerships and collaboration
· Contribute to culturally safe practice, education and service improvement initiatives
· Support responsiveness to Pasifika cultural values and family systems
About you
You are a compassionate and culturally grounded professional who brings strong relationships, lived experience and a deep understanding of Te Ao Māori.
- Hours: 28 hours per week, Monday-Friday
What you’ll bring
· Strong grounding in te ao Māori, tikanga and whānau-centred practice
· Experience supporting Māori whānau, communities or patients
· Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in practice
· Ability to support people through serious illness, grief and loss
· Excellent relationship-building and communication skills
· A collaborative approach and ability to work across multidisciplinary teams
Ideally you will also have:
· Experience in hospice, palliative care or bereavement support
· Connections with local iwi, hapū, marae or Māori providers
· Knowledge of te reo Māori and local tikanga
· The ability to connect, engage and communicate with whānau Māori and Pasifika communities
· Awareness of Pasifika cultural values and community networks
