Fundamentals of Palliative care is a Hospice New Zealand programme designed for any healthcare worker caring for people with a palliative care need. Being educated about palliative care will help you improve the assessment and outcomes for people in your care, their whānau, as well as yourself and other healthcare workers.
The Fundamentals of Palliative Care consists of five online modules and two face-to-face workshop: 1. Fundamentals of Palliative Care—Combined Workshop and 2. Fundamentals of Palliative Care—Clinical Workshop.
Online modules

1. Essence of Palliative Care—this foundation module covers palliative care concepts and the culture of care.
2. The Palliative Care Approach—looks at communication, ethics and spirituality within the scope of palliative care.
3. Pain, Other Symptoms and Frequently Used Medications—this module looks at pain, other symptoms and palliative medicines.
4. Chronic Illness and Dementia—explores chronic illness and dementia for palliative care patients.
5. Care and Support at the End of Life—this final module covers the last days of life, grief, loss and caring for ourselves.
Workshop 2: Fundamentals of Palliative Care—Clinical Workshop
This half day workshop covers pain, other symptom management, chronic illness and dementia for palliative care patients and palliative medicines.
Workshop pre-requisite
To complete the Fundamentals of Palliative Care—Clinical Workshop, you need to have completed the three online modules.
1. Essence of Palliative Care (unless already completed)
2. Pain, Other Symptoms and Frequently Used Medications
3. Chronic Illness and Dementia
Please note: The 1-hour pharmacology session at the end of the workshop is mainly for health professionals who prescribe or administer medications, but others are welcome to attend if interested.
