Cranford Hospice extends a heartfelt thank you to Hastings Karamu Rotary Club, whose 35th annual Cocktail Party fundraiser, held in late July, brought a world-class new home for Cranford Hospice $155,000 closer to reality.
The result takes the club’s cumulative total to an extraordinary $835,000 raised over five years of the Cocktail Party, all directed towards a new purpose-built home for Cranford Hospice in Hawke’s Bay.
It caps off a milestone year on every count: 50 years of Hastings Karamu Rotary Club, 35 years of the Cocktail Party, and 10 years of Advanced Plumbing & Gas as lead sponsor. More than 400 guests attended the night, with a highlight being the sale of a stunning emerald ring, donated by Grieve Diamond Jewellers, which fetched $12,000, while a Craggy Range accommodation and hospitality package sold for $20,000.
Organising committee lead and current Hastings Karamu Rotary Club President Angus Thomson said the total was a strong result given local economic conditions.
“Our members really roll up their sleeves for our annual fundraiser. The event not only raises much-needed funds for important community organisations, but also brings people together for a unique and positive event, and raises awareness of the hard work and excellent health service provisions provided by Cranford,” he said.
Cranford Hospice Foundation Chairman Chris Tremain offered a huge thank you to Hastings Karamu Rotary Club for its ongoing dedication to the new hospice build.
“When the going got tough, when we had to look for a new home for Cranford Hospice, all the members of Hastings Karamu Rotary Club stepped up and dedicated their major fundraiser to us,” he said. “We’ve been overwhelmed by their commitment to making sure we build a new hospice, and are in awe of the club’s dedication to serving their community. This shows what can be achieved when a community rallies behind a cause.”
Setting sights on $1 million
Looking ahead, Hastings Karamu Rotary Club’s President said the club is fully committed to raising $1 million for Cranford Hospice’s new home—a goal that now feels firmly within reach thanks to this year’s result and the ongoing generosity of the community.
Cranford Hospice chief executive Andrew Lesperance said the ongoing support from Hastings Karamu Rotary Club is invaluable.
“The funds raised are critical, but just as important is the awareness this event brings to our work. We’re incredibly grateful for their commitment to Cranford,” Andrew said. “Hawke’s Bay deserves a world-class hospice, a place of dignity and comfort for families in need.”
Momentum builds for the wider campaign
The result adds momentum to the wider Cranford Hospice capital campaign, with $20.55 million now committed towards the $24 million target for the new home.
The new Cranford Hospice, to be built at 238 Havelock Road, Hastings, is on track for completion by the end of 2028. Building consent and project tendering will be finalised by the end of 2026, with construction set to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
